As many of us know, when we heard about green schools, we already aware of the benefits that we could harvest for the environment like saving the energy and money, reducing carbon emissions and reducing water consumption and the list goes on but have we ever put our thoughts on how far a green school can benefit us in terms of health and performance of our kids at schools?
Green schools can help to lower the risk of asthma attacks as it is the primary cause of poor school attendance in schools that have low indoor air quality. In fact, clean fresh air can improve attentiveness in class and eventually increase productivity as well as improving their academic performance.
Not only the students will benefit from this, school teachers and staff also can experience a significant change in their work and betterment of retention rate.
“A green school is about more than curriculum, more than programming and more than bricks and mortar. It’s a school that supports global sustainability in every way. A green school begins with the future in mind, designing a learning experience for students that will prepare them to lead the world toward a healthier, cleaner, more sustainable future.”
Here are some of the world's greenest schools and Malaysia is one of them!
1. The Green School Bali (Indonesia)
Established in 2008, at first glance, you may be mistaken it with an eco-resort than a school. The school is made up of bamboo and powered by solar panels and hydroelectricity.
2. The Independents Schools Foundation (ISF) (Hong Kong)
Owns an energy monitoring system that alert students when their energy consumption increase
3. Etania Green School (Malaysia)
Specially built for stateless children in Sabah who have no access to education in Malaysia. It has a high-set structure due to the fact that it is built in a flood-prone area. Uses solar panels for electricity and use the school’s roof as rainwater catchment for their daily usage.
Penang also has our own green school program every year where the State Government gives recognition and appreciation to schools that holds a very strong spirit and practices green efforts in the schools. This year marks the 10th year celebration for Penang Green School Awards in Penang.
